Hemorrhoids can be defined In a nutshell as a painful swollen veins in the lower portion of the anus or rectum.
But Hemorrhoids can be defined also as a vascular structures in the anal canal, specifically in the anus or rectum because of the too much pressure on the veins in the pelvic and rectal area causes hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can be painful and piles or pathological when inflamed or swollen. If The Hemorrhoids are in the rectum, the it called "Internal Hemorrhoids" and in the other hand we called it "External Hemorrhoids" if the Hemorrhoids are in the anus.
In other words, You can have both types of the hemorrhoids at the same time. But if the veins swell near the anus opening then we have the External Hemorrhoids, And if veins can also swell inside the anal canal forming Internal Hemorrhoids.
